I would bet that a simple pressure cooker is more reliable than a
complex autoclave. At least in general simple things are more reliable
than complex things. Pressure cookers are and have been used by many
for microbiology. So long as the size is adequate, sounds great.
Why would it damage the agar?
Safety. Are you concerned about microbiological safety or equipment
safety? The former depends on the user in either case. Maybe the
latter does, too.
