Subject: ANNOUNCEMENT: National Academy of Sciences Sackler Tapestry of
Life colloquium: 12/12-12/13/05
Importance: High

Dear All,

The National Academy of Sciences is featuring an Arthur M. Sackler
Colloquium on The Tapestry of Life: Lateral Transfers of Heritable
Elements. The Tapestry of Life colloquium will take place at the
Beckman Center of the National Academies in Irvine, CA on December
12-13, 2005.

It would be greatly appreciated if you can forward the Colloquium
information to your colleagues, students, faculty members and
individuals who would be interested in attending.

To facilitate the participation of younger scientists, a number of
travel reimbursements will be available for graduate students and
postdocs to help subsidize their travel to the conference.

*********************************

What Darwin saw as a tree of life descending in a linear fashion, is now
more accurately seen as a tapestry of life, an anastomosing network,
with important lateral transfers of heritable elements among parallel
lines of descent. These transfers range in complexity from small
insertion sequences, to whole genes, gene islands, and portions of whole
genomes which may be combined in symbiogenesis. The purpose of the
colloquium is to bring together researchers, empirical and theoretical,
working at all levels on genomics, comparative genomics, and
metagenomics to identify common and differentiating features of lateral
gene transfer and to examine their implications for science and for
human concerns.

We encourage you and your colleagues to attend this Colloquium. The
general participant registration fee is $250 (late registration fee is
$350 after September 30th) and a reduced all-inclusive registration fee
of $100 is offered to Graduate Students and Postdocs. The registration
fee includes the cost of meals, reception, and banquet.

The organizers have added a poster session to the Colloquium, scheduled
for 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. at the Beckman Center on Monday, December
12th. General participants and students are eligible to participate in
the poster session.

For more information about the poster session and the Colloquium, or to
register, please go to www.nas.edu/sackler/tapestry or email us at
sackler at nas.edu.
