I have just heard that Allan Wilson has died. He was undergoing bone-marrow
transplant therapy for leukemia here in Seattle.
The research news article "Systematics Goes Molecular" in the 22 February
1991 issue of Science (251: 872-874) traces the impact of graduates of his
laboratory on molecular systematics. It was in effect a tribute to Allan
Wilson.
Others will have much to say about Allan's (very large) contribution to
molecular evolution. I will only comment that his orientation toward making
molecular data illuminate evolutionary processes was one of the reasons his
laboratory has been such a large force in molecular evolution.
