It is easy to forget that substantial parts of the human race live with
high infant mortality, widespread epidemics, and lethal famine. These
doubtless exert strong selective influences. It's often commented that
medical care has eliminated natural selection on humans, but this is
true (or even partially true) only for a relatively small proportion of
us.
