What about paramutation? It is not the same as directed mutation,
but does exhibit some strange features, as best I understand it.
Would anyone care to explain the latest hypotheses about what it
is and how it works? Is paramutation some sort of DNA methylation
effected by some unknown cellular component? Is it in any way
directed? Has it ever been detected in the absence of (relaxed)
strong artificial selection?
