The only published article that I am aware of is:
T.S. Ray, "An approach to the synthesis of life", in "Artificial Life
II; Proceedings of the workshop on artificial life, held Feb 1990 in
Santa Fe, New Mexico", editors C.G. Langton, C. Taylor, J.D. Farmer,
and S. Rasmussen; Published by Addison-Wesley, 1992. ISBN
0-201-52571-2 (paperback edition).
I also discuss Tierra (if I may be allowed to give my book a cheap
plug), in G.W. Rowe, "Theoretical Models in Biology", Oxford U. Press,
1994; ISBN 0-19-859688-X.
The code for tierra is available via ftp from alife.santafe.edu (at
least this is the telnet address - you can login as 'bbs' and look
around - I think tierra is in the SOFTWARE directory).
