Re promoter evolution
I think the reference that Eric Cabot is referring to was
Hudson Kreitman and Aguade 1987. I'm afraid that's all that comes
to mind at the moment, but with that and Drosophila ADH you might be
able to track it down. Kreitman et al (probably different al.) wrote a series
of papers on this topic in the late '80s. Now if I could just find my
PhD thesis...
