Just a quibble about attribution, but "now" started in the early 1960s
with the trees of different globins made by Zuckerkandl and Pauling.
In fact those were some of the very first molecular trees, and they were of
loci, not organisms.  What is different now is not methodological advances but
a lot more sequences being available.
