Postdoctoral Research Fellow In Molecular Evolution

Dr. David OBrochta, University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute, Center
for Agricultural Biotechnology wishes to sponsor highly qualified recent
Ph.D.s  interested in applying for a postdoctoral fellowships in Molecular
Evolution sponsored by the National Science Foundation and Alfred P. Sloan
Foundation, of the USDA.  The fellow will be responsible for conducting a
research project investigating the evolution of hAT transposable elements in
heliothine moths.  hAT transposable elements are a widespread and
significant family of elements that includes hobo from D. melanogaster and
Ac from maize.  Members of this family have unusual mobility properties
which will make understanding their evolution particulary important.  These
elements can also be used  as genetic engineering tools and their
identification and isolation from these economically important moths will
have widespread practical application.  We have preliminary data indicating
that such elements will be present in some heliothine moths.

Dr. OBrochta has an active research program investigating the biology and
mechanisms of movement of hAT elements in insects and their development into
genetic engineering tools.  Dr. OBrochtaUs laboratory is adjacent to a
large molecular systematics laboratory ion of DNA from know
species of heliothines is available for this project.
