From June 15 to June 17, 1995, a workshop on

***************************************************************************

             "NEW MATHEMATICAL METHODS FOR RECONSTRUCTING
                    PHYLOGENETIC RELATIONSHIPS"

will take place at the University of Bielefeld which is organized jointly
by the "Research Center for Structure Formation" and the "New Zealand
Bioinformatics group".

Recent approaches to analyzing and/or reconstructing phylogenetic
relationships will be presented and discussed.

The workshop intends to strengthen the cooperation between biologists,
mathematicians, statisticians, and computer scientists in this field.

In particular, the following topics are to be addressed:

--The Basics of Sequence Alignment

--Secondary and Tertiary Structural Alignment

--Estimation of Genetic Distance: Weighted Hamming Metrics and Their
  'Corrections', Stochastic Models

--Trees, Networks, and Discrete Metric Spaces

--An Introduction to 'Split Decomposition'

--An Introduction to 'Spectral Analysis' of Sequence Data

--How to Work with Biological Sequence Data Banks

--Relevant Examples from the Biological Data Bases

In addition, there will be a poster and a problem session, where
participants can present their results and discuss their questions.
