As a non-biologist trying to get to grips with the whys and wherefores of
the genetic code, and its inherent redundancy, I'd be grateful with any
help on the following question:
what are the relative mutation rates T->C, T->A, T->G, C->T, C->A, C->G
etc;
Also - the third letter of each codon seems to be largely redundant...is
there a good reason for this (especially in the light of the possibility of
frameshifts etc). Do all codons make sense (or do 'missense' codons act as
'useful' stop messages)?
I'd appreciate mailed (rather than posted) replies if poss...
TIA,
monty
