Molecular Clocks--Math theory

The theory behind molecular clocks is a mathematical theory.  The time
from a fixed point to the Nth random point in a Poisson process is a
random variable with an Erlang distribution.  By counting the number of
points (mutations) in the process, the time interval can be estimated.
