There certainly are many gene clusters in fungi, as well as "cluster
genes," which encode multifunctional proteins. Multifunctional proteins
are also characteristic of other organisms. Back to gene clusters, keep
an eye out for the mycotoxin literature. There is accumulating evidence
that many mycotoxins (toxic to humans or to plants, etc.) are
synthesized by enzymes encoded by gene clusters.
