Dear Randy,

You should look at an old literature in the late 50's and early 60's by
Gunther Stent and his follow-ons.  They mapped out point mutations to very
fine detail and demonstrated with very high precision the distribution and
relative frequenies of mutations.  Many mutants would pile up at points and
sometimes a whole region would be "hot."
