Sounds more like the typical results you get with many intergeneric
(and interspecific) hybrids.  The level of complexity has nothing to
do with it, apes are just as biologically "complex" as humans.  It's
all a matter of the incompatability of genomes that have diverged over
a few million years of isolation.
