Some literature for the layman is "In search of the double helix", can't
remember the author but he has written a lot of popularised science. He is also
the author of "In search of Schrodingers cat".
Try something like "The Quark and the Jaguar" by Murray Gel Mann for an
exteremely interesting and more holistic perspective.
