Training Course in Molecular Evolution
October 2-5, 1996
CIHEAM - Istituto Agronomico Mediterraneo Bari (Italy)
funded by
CNR, Italy
and
EMBnet Education and Training Committee
The course is addressed to researchers in the field of Genetics and
Molecular Biology. It is designed to provide trainees with basic concepts in
Molecular Evolution; they will practice the use of the major computer
programs for evolutionary analysis. The major topics covered in the course
programme are:
a) nucleotide and protein alignment,
b) rates and patterns of nucleotide substitutions,
c) methods for estimating the number of substitutions in nucleotide and
protein sequences,
d) molecular phylogeny.
The course will include
* lectures on basic concepts and outstanding research in the field of
Molecular Evolution
* tutorials on algorithms and computer programmes for multiple alignments
and evolutionary analysis
* hands-on practice on the computer
