Faster DNA sequencing is resulting in large data sets that are difficult to
evaluate quantitatively. Standard methods of analyis were designed for
smaller numbers of sequences and may be surprisingly weak at detecting all
the information in larger data sets. Some new approachs, based on standard
tree comparison metrics will be described briefly and new ideas outlined.
The illustrations will be based on human mitochondrial DNA sequences and the
overall results allow some strong conclusions on the origin and dispersal of
modern humans.
