Protozoan Parasites etc.

I am interested to know if anyone has ever done any research on the
possible effects of protozoan parasites on the origin and evolution of
the Hominids. The prevailing model for hominid evolution proposes that
the drying out of the African continent created dry, sparsely forested
savannahs more conducive to walking than swinging. It occured to me
that this climate change would have had a dramatic effect on the
population of mosquitoes which generally like wet environments. If this
is the case, then presumeably there was something like a mini population
explosion as the weight of malaria disease burden was alleviated.
Just an idea but it would be interesing to know if anyone has given it
more serious attention.
