The program Phylodendron may not do what you need yet, Bob.
It does have the option to hide branches or nodes (and any
descendant nodes); it produces PICT and Postscript output
files; it runs on any system with a Java runtime, including
MacOS, MSWin95/NT, and various Unix flavors (Linux included,
but I don't know about HP-UX).
Since it is a bit of hassle still to install the java
runtime system, wait until you have a some free time to try it.
