prokaryote evolution

A question from a senior student soon to enter graduate research: what
sort of work has been done concerning the population genetics of
prokaryotes?  I've read work on systematics and phylogenetics, but not
-yet- on, say, the effect of horizontal pathways of inheritance on the
dynamics of genetic variance.
