The Departments of Zoology and Marine Science, Otago University, New
Zealand invite applications for TWO research positions leading to a PhD
degree in the field of molecular evolutionary biology.

The aim of this research is to investigate the effects of variable
hydrographic environments among the 14 fiords in western New Zealand on
the population genetics of marine invertebrates that exhibit
contrasting reproductive strategies and dispersal potentials.

We have funding from the Royal Society of New Zealand for three years
that includes NZ$14,000 emolument per graduate student (partially to
pay for University fees, the amount depending on country of origin),
consumables, equipment and sampling trips.

Applicants should be able to demonstrate a strong theoretical
background in evolutionary genetics coupled with a good understanding
of organismic biology, especially that of marine invertebrates.
Practical experience of lab procedures will be regarded highly. Lab
procedures we intend to use will include microsatellite cloning and
mtDNA sequencing.

Applicants should send a curriculum vitae, names and (e-mail) addresses
of three referees, and a cover letter including a short description of
their background and research experience to

or by post to the address below, by January 1st 1999. Applicants should
be able to start by March 1999.
