Hattiesburg, Mississippi                                                               
The use of spatial data in computer systems is becoming more widespread as
the capabilities of desktop systems continue to expand at a phenomenal
rate. Uses for spatial data are almost unlimited and can include
applications such as mission planning for military systems, environmental
and health studies and business demographics, as well as a plethora of
others. Tools for manipulating and analyzing spatial data that is
geographical in nature usually fall under the general title of
Geographical Information Systems (GIS). The use of spatial data by
computers is uniquely challenging because continuous data must be
transformed to a discrete representation. Such a representation is by
necessity complex; thus issues of spatial data computation are also
complex. This session will emphasize algorithms and computational
techniques used in spatial data analysis and manipulation and GIS. 
Examples of relevant topics include, but are not limited to, geometric
computations, spatial indexing, visualization algorithms, and distributed
and/or parallel computing techniques as applied to spatial data.
