Research Technician in Molecular Ecology

The Institute of Zoology invites applications
for the post of Research Technician in Molecular
Ecology. The post is for one year, available
from 1 November 2001, and is part of a European
Commission-funded project entitled "Impact of
aquaculture on the immune response genes of
natural salmonid populations: spatial and
temporal genetic signatures and potential
fitness consequences". Other partners in the
project include laboratories in Holland, Norway
and the Republic of Ireland.

The project will initially involve
characterisation of major histocompatibility
complex (MHC) genes in Atlantic salmon (Salmo
salar) and brown trout (Salmo trutta). Later,
MHC variation in both species will be screened
for (i) evidence of an impact of aquaculture on
MHC frequency distributions in natural populations
and (ii) fitness consequences of individual MHC
genotypes under semi-natural experimental
conditions. Experience of molecular population
genetics and/or immunogenetics would be a
pre-requisite for the post.

Starting salary will be in the range GBP 14,496 to
17,029 (including London weighting) depending on
experience. For further details of the post contact
