In mammalian genomes, the gene cluster is the rule rather than the exception,
even what were thought to be single genes originally - like beta 
globin - are now known to be members of clusters of related genes
that were presumably formed by unequal crossing over followed by 
divergence.  There is a huge literature on this topic.  Try a Medline
search.
