Hoffman (born on Jan 11th) demonstrated the 1st synthesis of the natural
compound lysergic acid and subsequently demonstrated its derivatization
(v. "discovery") as LSD-25 - tartaric acid salt of lysergic acid
diethylamide. Observation of psychic effect due to exposure in
synthesis might indicate he was a sloppy chemist - but it doesn't take
much. Maybe lucky for him he wasn't synthesizing biological toxins.
His inane description as "medicine for the soul" notwithstanding,
Hoffman may have been correct in anticipating useful therapeutic
application in psychoanalysis. It may surprise the grinning poster that
he attributed this missed opportunity to prohibition secondary to the
material's abuse as it was "hijacked by the 60's youth movement."
