The work is on hippocampus place cells; originally done by O'Keefe (I
think). Try starting with O'Keefe (1979) Progress in Neurobiology
13:419-439. More recently people have tried to find "place cells" in
primates (try Feigenbaum & Rolls (1991) Psychobiology 19:21-40). I'm not
sure what the current state of play is.
