Interestingly, Singer et al have found 40 Hz oscillations in the visual
cortex of the cat. They discovered that the synchronization of these
oscillations depended upon the integrity of the object being seen. Their
hypothesis was that these oscillations are responsible for perception
of coherent groups of features as a single object.

Perhaps the 40Hz oscillations in the humans have a similar function.
Crick & Koch hypothesized that coherent oscillations might be responsible
for consciousness. Is the latest discovery what we have been watiting for?
