Inhibitory neurotransmitters like GABA and glycine operate by increasing
the potential difference that must be overcome to open the voltage-
sensitive channels. Unless these can be opened, the local signal will
not propagate to the neuronal soma and axonal hillock (where the
non-linearity of the system is expressed and the signal generated for
transmission down the axon).
