Have you looked into research and hypotheses about the role of oxytocin
in pair-bonding? There are a couple of chapters by Carter that deal
with hormones and neuroendocrine processes in human and other animals in
<Behavioral Endocrinology> (1992) edited by Becker, Breedlove, and
Crews; and published by MIT Press Cambridge.
