Yes, there are various "overlays" within
visual cortex, and there are primary and
'secondary' cortical areas, and 'circuits'
in subcortically-based preprocessing,
but each of these areas are flat-out
necessary within 'the' nervous system's
integrated functioning, so I do not see
any way that they can be ordered in a
"hierarchy" -- lesion them, and the
=whole= of the remaining nervous sys-
tem's functionality changes.
I think "hierarchy" is just one of those
