M.S. and beta-Interferon Treatment

Hi,

    I'm a chemist with very little bio background.  My aunt has just been 
diagnosed with MS (MRI found several plaques in her brain).  Its in its early 
stages right now (no episodes), so they've suggested an 'experimental' 
treatment---beta-interferon.  I was wondering if anyone heard of it, and could 
tell me anything about it.  Since I don't know anything at all concerning 
this--all information is welcome.
