Student Requests Help on Hydroponics

As a requirement for my AP biology & physics classes, I have to do a project
pertaining to both biology & physics.  I have selected the problem of plant
hydroponics as it would be used on a Mars/moon colony, and plants to be
transported and grown could be carried there in culture form.  I have to
build a working prototype, and was thinking about using a PVC hydroponic
system with an automated pump/timer system.  Does anyone know where plans
for such a thing exist?!
