Location. The Fifth International Chrysophyte Symposium will take place on
the campus of Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville (SIUE). The SIUE
campus is just across the Mississippi River from St. Louis, Missouri in
Edwardsville, Illinois. By car, the campus is about 20 minutes from the
St. Louis business district and about 40 minutes from the airport. We have
reserved 125 spaces at the SIUE campus.
Dates. The Fifth International Chrysophyte Symposium meeting occurs on
July 27-31, 1999.
Coordination with the IBC. Please note that the Fifth International
Chrysophyte Symposium occurs the week before the XVIth International
Botanical Congress (IBC), which will take place on August 1-7, 1999 in St.
Louis. Participants attending the Fifth International Chrysophyte Symposium
also may want to stay the following week to attend the IBC in St. Louis.
For your information, the IBC web page is http://www.ibc99.org. The
previous international chrysophyte symposia have attracted from about
30-100 scientists. In contrast, as many as 10,000 botanists may attend
the 1999 IBC. Thus, participation in both the Fifth International
Chyrsophyte Symposium and the IBC can provide an international meeting in
the atmosphere of both a small and large meeting, respectively.
Background. Robert Andersen organized The first International Chrysophyte
Symposium in 1983 in Grand Forks, North Dakota, USA, following the national
meeting of the Associated Institutes of the Biological Sciences (AIBS).
Since then, the "Chrysophyte Symposium" has been held every four years
(1987 in Berlin, Germany; 1991 in Kingston, Ontario, Canada and 1995 in
Hosterkob, Denmark). The broad international scope of the attendees has
been characteristic of all previous meetings. A proceedings of scientific
papers ranging from about 250-400 pages has been published following each
meeting. Basic and applied research on chrysophytes has lead to a
diversity of approaches including studies of taxonomy, molecular genetics,
systems ecology, paleolimnology, physiology, evolutionary biology,
biochemistry, community ecology, and cellular ultrastructure as well as
problems associated with toxicity and taste and odor production in water.
Goals of the Meeting. We seek to stimulate student interest in a broad
array of subjects on chrysophyte biology and to facilitate the exchange of
ideas on these poorly understood organisms among an international gathering
of scientists. We welcome proposals for additional Round Table Discussions
or similar interactions.
Paper Presentation Formats. Contributed papers will be either oral or
poster presentations. Contributed oral papers will be either 20 or 30
minutes, including time for questions. Sessions dedicated to poster
presentations are planned. No concurrent sessions are expected. The length
of the symposia talks is at the discretion of the symposium organizer but
usually will be 30 or 40 minutes in length.
Publication of the Proceedings: Arrangements already have been made to
publish manuscripts from the meetings as a symposium proceedings in Nova
Hedwigia Beiheft. Manuscripts considered for publication will be submitted
upon arrival at the meetings.
Transportation to and from the Meeting Site. Air transportation is easily
accessible to the St. Louis International Airport. Bus and rail service to
St. Louis also are available. Van or bus service from the airport to the
SIUE campus on July 27th and from the SIUE campus to the airport and hotels
associated with the IBC on August 1st are planned but will not be included
in the registrations costs.
Meeting Site. The meeting will be held on the campus of Southern Illinois
University at Edwardsville. The meeting rooms are in the student center and
are a 5 minute walk from on-campus housing in a very nice, new dormitory.
We have reserved space for about 125 attendees. Paths through wooded
areas, several nearby ponds and university recreational facilities with
indoor and outdoor swimming pools are available. Microscopes for examining
algal samples will be accessible in the Biological Sciences Department,
only a 5 minute walk from the student center. The Mississippi River is
about 5 miles from the SIUE campus. Meals will be available in the student
center. Other options are available locally but will not be convenient
except by motorized transportation.
Target Dates
December 1, 1999 Preferred date for return of "Request for the 2nd
Circular"
Meeting information is available upon request via mail or email or from the
web site.
January 15, 1999 The 2nd Circular with abstract and registration
forms will be mailed.
March 15, 1999 Abstracts and Registration forms will be due.
July 27, 1999 Manuscripts for the published proceedings should be
submitted upon arrival.
