                                   Postdoctoral Position
                 1 year (October 2002 - September 2003)

Topic: Novel heterotrophic lineages in marine picoplankton

Oceanic Phytoplankton group

BP 74, 29682 Roscoff, France

This position is funded by the French Ministry of Education and will
be carried out in the frame the FP5 EU program PICODIV (2001-2003)
which focuses on the diversity of picoplankton in coastal and oceanic
waters following on recent work showing that oceanic picoplankton
diversity is very high with many phyla containing uncultured
representatives (Moon-van der Staay S.Y., De Wachter R., Vaulot D.
2001. Oceanic 18S rDNA sequences from picoplankton reveal new
eukaryotic lineages. Nature 409: 607-610). Emphasis will be on the
caracterisation, isolation and ecological role of novel heterotrophic
lineages, in particular alveolates, using rDNA probes detected by
FISH-TSA (see Not et al. 2002 AME).

1 - The candidate should be less than 35 year-old on Dec 31 2002. 2 -

approaches inolving rDNA genes on bacteria or unicellular eukaryotes
(in particular cloning and sequencing, phylogenetical analysis, rRNA
probes) will be critical - Familiarity in protist taxonomy will be
highly desirable - Some knowledge of the French language will be
critical for rapid integration in our team
