Its all gone very quiet out there. Are we all to busy, or is it
because the subject area is too restricted to generate much traffic?
I suspect both, but might I suggest that we widen the scope of this
group to "plant pathology" in general. Having scanned several news
groups I see that other wide groups such as "mycology" don't
generate too much discussion to be of value. What do people think?
My only fear of such a development is that it a molecular biology
emphasis could obscure discussion of more 'traditional' pathology
interests.

Greetings,

We have begun to use the nontranscibed spacer (NTS1) region
of the nuclear ribosomal RNA repeat for studing phlyogenetic
relationships of closely relates species and members of species
complexes, such as Puccinnia hordei. Has anyone else used this
region, and if so what have your experinces been. We find that this
region contains repeat units that complicate the DNA alingment step,
but contains a lot of useful information.

Thanks,

Les

Subject: Use of the group

I oppose the expansion of this group to "plant pathology".
"Lack of traffic" does not worry me - I have plenty of things to
do. The present set-up is available when we want to use it.

Subject: Genetic linkages of rust and mildew resistance genes

1.	Pm4 - Yr1 - 2cM, that is close, as predicted by
Bariana and McIntosh (1993 Genome 36, 476-482). Probably
accounts for lack of Yr1 and Pm4b combinations in European
wheats.

2.	We have a durum-derived gene for stripe rust resistance
that is allelic with Yr15. The two genes can be distinguished
on the basis of infection type. Yr15 gives an almost immune
response, whereas the durum derivative gives a very necrotic
response. I would predict that specificities are different, but
we have virulence for neither gene.

3.	A stripe rust resistance gene present in Selkirk and a
number of CIMMYT wheats such as Ciano 79 will map close to the
Yr5/Yr7 locus.

4.	Yr5 appears to be transmitted at very low frequencies in
some crosses. We do not think suppression of Yr5 is involved.

5.	Sr10 maps near Lr23 and Lr13 in chromosome 2BS.

6.	We have located the inhibitor of Pm8. I am not prepared
to divulge the location to everyone at this stage, but I am
prepared to give results to individuals with an immediate
research interest.

        Dear Coleagues,

At the 1992 Conference in Germany The Netherlands were elected as the next
host country. We are highly pleased to welcome you in our country. The first
circular has been mailed and we received already eight replies !

For those of you who did not receive this form, the text of the first circular
is included in this message. In case you are interested to participate, please
contact the address for all correspondence (see below) or check the first 1995
issue of the Cereal Rusts & Powdery Mildews Bulletin, which is about to be
printed and will reach the subscribers in due time.

For those of you who are not familiar with this bulletin. The Cereal Rusts &
Powdery Mildews Bulletin is published by the European and Mediterranean
Cereal Rust Foundation since 1973. The bulletin publishes research articles,
letters to the editor, short communications and notes concerning rust and
mnildew pathogens of cereals and is primarily meant as a discussion platform
and vehicle to quickly exchange information and opinions. The Foundation
is the organizer of the Cereal Rusts and Powdery Mildews Conferences which
are organized every four years.

In case you are interested in the Bulletin you can contact me through E-mail.
