X-Dmw-Body-Names: chain letters on rust-mil newsgroup

Dear Rusty-Mildewy people,

I've had a couple of complaints from members of the Rust-Mil newsgroup
about chain letters asking for money, and other inappropriate uses of
the mailing list. There is actually nothing at all that I can do about
this at present. The best thing to do with chain letters and similar
junk mail is to ignore them completely: if you reply to the person
sending the chain letter, they'll just add you to their list of e-mail
addresses to which to send unwanted advertising.

The only thing that could be done is for me to "moderate" the group:
i.e. messages sent to the rust-mil group would be sent to me first of
all, then, when I've checked that their contents are appropriate and
not offensive, I would forward them to the group as a whole. However,
I've checked the archives of the last few months' mails (*) and in
fact there haven't been that many junk mails. I'd therefore prefer not
to moderate the rust-mil group, but if a substantial number of you
want me to do so, I'll reconsider it.

(*) If you want to check the archives for yourself, the address is
http://www.bio.net/hypermail/RUST-MILDEW/

Also, while I'm here, information about subscribing to Rust-Mil is on
the internet at: http://www.uea.ac.uk/nrp/jic/c817rmil.htm. Please
pass that address on to your colleagues who want to join so that they
don't send "subscribe" messages to the whole group!

Best wishes,

James Brown

Dear Helge,

* Dear James,
*
* Thank you for maintaining the rustmil newsgroup from the bio.net
server.
* It has worked nice for me, e.g. with my last questions about races
of mildew
* on triticale.
*
* One thing, however, I do not like, is that this newsgroup is used
for non
* scientific purposes, like chain letters to make money. I do not like
such a
* focus on money here, and I do believe that most of the members do
not  eather.
*
* It seems like everyone could reach our newsgroup be surfing on
Internet and
* send a message to the whole group. Is that correct? Is there no
control of
* who is joining the group?
*
* Chain letters are forbidden by the police in Norway.
*
*
* Best regards from
*
*
* Helge Skinnes
*
*
