Hi!

I need ideas for a school Biology project, due the end of March. It must be a
hypothesis on any topic. I'm looking for any interesting and different ideas.
(Grade 11 Biology)

Have I used the correct newsgroup?!

Thanks. Please e-mail me: Damien@iafrica.com if you have any suggestions!

Cheers!

Some cool topics in biology are restriction enzymes ( they cut DNA at
certain recognition sequences), H. pylori associated ulcers, or
transforamtion or bacteria. These are pretty advanced subject, so you would
have to do quite a bit of research, but they really are interesting topics
to study. Good Luck on your project.

Please help !
Does anyone of you know which nucleases perform methylisation of
nucleotids and where it is comercially availuable ?

     - How specific can the mathylisation be in practice :
i.e is there a similar variety of Methylases like there is for Class II
restriction enzymes ?

-A more specific question is wheather there is a known methylase
that performs the following site-speciffic methylisation depending
strongly of the recognition sequence (like GGAATTC or AAGCTT):

                 m m
GAATTC ----> GAATTC or AAGCTT ---> AAGCTT

-Are there analogous principles for de-mathylisation known (i.e.
Sequence-speciffic)
These questions are in some way essential for a theoretic
work on possible DNA-computing mechanisms I am working on .
I would be allso very happy and thakfull for usefull refernces about
principles of methylasation ,if any are known !

      Thank you in advance
                    Kindly yours

Does anybody know where I can get hold of fresh D. max. to refresh our

species at the moment, I'd like to hear from them if so. Peter McEwen,

I am looking for a eukaryotic expression construct with a promoter
that can be made to express in proportion to a given stimulus. I am
already aware of heat shock, and Tet systems, but these are either
on or off.... not able to express in gradations. If anyone is aware

I don't think any number of advertisements or admonishments will ever
alleviate the confusion and ambiguity of a VECTORS group. Again
I will make the suggestion to split the group into:

bionet.biology.vectors.entomology
bionet.biology.vectors.{cloning,molecular,genetic,...}

or even (more logical to me) move the entomology vector group to
the existing entomology hierarchy "sci.bio.entomology" as

sci.bio.entomology.vectors

No prejudice here. I work with both and would like to see both
groups active. Any discussion? (beyond another posting of the
group charter)

No one has come forward to moderate or initiate an unmoderated newgroup
on cloning vectors etc., that is, I have not seen any call for =
discussion
on this topic. Generally, most of this discussion takes place
(and rightfully so) in the bionet.molbio.methds-reagnts newsgroup.

I, too, tire of posting the charter to errant posters and have been=20
considering the alternative of changing the name of the newsgroup.=20
While those suggested by JK above are fine, my own preference would be
to keep the newsgroup within the bionet umbrella for a number of =
reasons.
The most obivous of which is the nice job of messages archiving done by
www.bio.net.=20

Hence, my preference might be bionet.biology.vectors.disease or=20
bionet.entomology.vector.biology. Though I am not certain that any of
these names (JK's above or mine) would eliminate the cloning vector =
posts, as
I suspect these posters just search for the word vector(s) and blindly =
send=20
their message without ever checking the newsgroup. Maybe the word
"vector" must be removed from the name completely?

Oddly enough, there was no discussion of this topic during the "Call for =
=20
Discussion" period and the current name and group passsed by a=20
resounding 204 yes votes to 0 no votes. =20

Colleagues, your comments please!

1. Should we change the name of the vector-biology newsgroup? (bionet.
biology.vectors).

2. If so, what should the new name be?

I agree. The confusion is inherent in the current name of this group.

I don't think this will solve the problem. Most of these messages are posted
from foreign sources. They are doing a search for the word "vector." In my
opinion, as long as that word is used, we will have these problems.

Excuse please

As a non specialist, when doing investigations, one has to keep an open mind
on vectors (in the classical, broader sense). A disease vector need not be an
insect. Maybe this group could split later in various specialties as
required in the evolutionary sense of internet growth.

or perhaps a group bionet.parasitology.vectors if you want to leave it in
the bionet heirarchy. during the time that this groups CFD and CFV were
held our usenet server was out (actually for the past 2 months) so i'm
sorry that i didn't get to voice an opinion on this sooner. when i first
saw the group name though i assumed that it had to do with plasmids, not
mosquitos. however i would like to see both a group devoted to disease
vectors and one (maybe) devoted to plasmid problems and discussions as
well.

Just a reminder that our charter states

"The purpose of the VECTOR-BIOLOGY newsgroup is to provide a
communications forum for biologists, molecular biologists and
parasitologists, entomologists, medical specialists, vector control
professionals and others involved in the research and control of
arthropods which transmit disease to plants and animals."

This would include viruses etc., hence, not restricted to
parasites.

I am confused by this. Are you suggesting that we transform the curr=

because a relatively small group of uninformed people keep posting er=

In my opinion, that is a result of several different groups that ove=

I suggest that those of you who are interested in a cloning vector
newsgroup.... start one. This one will remain VECTOR-BIOLOGY and will
be moderated as with moderation the cloning vector posts will be
eliminated.

Rick is absolutely correct! This newsgroup is not going to be abandoned
by the errant postings on cloning vectors. If people are interested in
cloning vectors etc, let them start their own newgroup. VECTOR-BIOLOGY
is:

"the VECTOR-BIOLOGY newsgroup is to provide a
communications forum for biologists, molecular biologists and
parasitologists, entomologists, medical specialists, vector control
professionals and others involved in the research and control of
arthropods which transmit disease to plants and animals."

I have initiated the process to convert this unmoderated newgroup to
moderated. This will eliminate the errant clonging vector posts!

I was extremely pleased several months ago when Dennis et al. started the
VECTOR-BIOLOGY discussion list since this would provide a forum to talk about
issues that were completely absent from other related lists such as MOSQUITO-L
and ENTOMO-L. We have now arrived at message #134 and strangely enough, some
50% of the messages are from people asking for specific cloning vectors and
perhaps another 30% discuss whether this list should have another name.
This fact raises some points listed below (in no particular order).
a) Why are there so few contributions from the group that actually voted for
this discussion list? Are there no questions and problems?
b) The idea of changing the name so that "plasmidologists" can keep using
this discussion list without being bothered by the "real owners" reminds
me of a case several years ago, when a big department store in NY (it was
either Bloomingdale's or Macy's) asked a small family business in a New
England town to change the identical name that it had had for more than
150 years so that potential customers of the large store don't get confused.
c) Is there a way to "merge" VECTOR-BIOLOGY with the other lists mentioned
above? This would innundate the discussion with mosquito stuff and, after
a while, it would certainly scare off the "plasmidologists".
d) Although I understand the need for moderation, please think of what will
happen one day when one of the "real owners" asks for information on a
   cloning vector.
Let's keep the list as it is for a while (without moderation) and pray for
more contributions from the "real owners".
Kitsos Louis
(interested in BOTH kind of vectors, but only the creepy ones in this list!)

Colleagues,
I have placed images and descriptions of Anopheles gambiae mutants on the
WWW at a site called "Anopheles gambiae Mutant World." Their inheritance is
briefly described, interactions with other mutants is noted, and available
references are listed. Most of the mutants described are extant. Also
included is information regarding selection of eye-color mutants using
larval color change.

Your help and advice is needed. We are writing a humor book about the
mosquitos. There are folklore, remedies, humorous stories about these
pest that have disrupted many a outdoor venture.

Would any of your member provide us with insite about the mosquito, their
habits, history and ANY related information that would be of interest in
a general book to the public.

Thanking you in advance in reading this. Sincerely, Robert E. Owens

I'm interrupting the usual monthly posting of the BIOSCI miniFAQ to
bring you up to date on BIOSCI fundraising progress, a topic of
concern to your future use of this resource. Thank you in advance for
taking the time to read this message carefully.

Last year we announced that BIOSCI was going to adopt the U.S. Public
Broadcasting System model to fund its operations after our DOE/NSF
grant runs out later this year. Unlike PBS, we are not soliciting
contributions from users; we are only selling ads on our Web pages
solely to cover our operating costs. Our goal is to seek sponsorships
until we build up an operating reserve of about $100,000 and then
cease further promotions until we need to build the reserve back up.
(The accountants among our readership will be familiar with the
problem of deferred revenue which we can not safely utilize until ads
have been displayed for a period of time.) We have three sponsors to
date with a couple more pending. The process is time-consuming,
however, and we need your help as explained further below.

Our operating costs consist of our network connection, phone lines,
hardware maintenance (we hope to have new and faster hardware soon!),
plus 0.7 FTE of salaries covering UNIX systems admin, technical
support, quality assurance, i.e., testing, of our system, and
administrative costs (such as the time it takes to actually
find/write/call potential sponsors and raise money!). Although the
BIOSCI staff does get compensated for a portion of the work that they
do, this project has always received a lot of free after-hours and
"vacation" time labor, so we hope that no one will begrudge the time
that we do charge to the project to serve you. All of the three
part-time staff members, Dave Mack, Julie Lawrence, and myself, have
full time day jobs and families in addition to working hard to keep
this service running for all of you. Julie and Dave Mack are
subcontractors for BIOSCI; my time that is charged to the project
defrays a portion of my regular salary instead of adding to my income.

Besides having to relocate the project, we were very busy this last
year building new infrastructure such as our WWW hypermail interface
to the system. This was released last December along with scores of
WAIS indices for the newsgroups. Virtually everything is complete,
although we do continue to find and fix bugs (many through your
helpful feedback!). We are still having some problems with our WAIS
indexing. The archives continue to grow rapidly. We are running over
100 indexes now versus three previously and any systems crashes cause
greater havoc with the indexing than before! We are still working to
fix this as fast as our resources permit and appreciate your patience,
but we have been able to automate a lot of the infrastructure to
reduce labor as compared to past requirements.

We have also implemented new software to make moderation of
BIOSCI/bionet newsgroups much easier and combat the growing problem of
Internet junk mail and USENET "spamming." About 20% of our groups are
now moderated, many of them by the BIOSCI staff! This, for example,
made a major difference last year in the quality of content in our
EMPLOYMENT/bionet.jobs.offered newsgroup which many commercial
concerns and recruiting firms are using **without charge** to recruit
candidates for positions in the biological sciences.

We are also now in a position to have sponsors for individual
newsgroups as you will have noticed if you have visited
http://www.bio.net/ and clicked on "Access the BIOSCI/bionet
newsgroups" recently.

So, how can you help??
----------------------

As noted above it can take a lot of time to contact potential sponsors
if I have to do it all myself. Our request is quite simple. You can
do two important things which will take very little time for you
individually.

First, please use our WWW system at http://www.bio.net/ to access the
archives. You can now post or reply to messages via your Web browser.
Your usage helps attract sponsors. If you contact any of our
sponsors, please be sure to thank them for supporting BIOSCI. It is
critical for them to get this feedback if they are to continue their
sponsorship for the long term.

Second, if you work for a company or organization that provides
products or services of interest to the biology community, please pass
this message on to your marketing or marketing communications
department or other appropriate group. Please ask them to help
support BIOSCI by sponsoring our Web site and explain the uses and
benefits of the system to the biology community. If they are
interested, they can then contact us for further information at our
tech support address, biosci-help@net.bio.net.

Our hope is to quickly raise several large corporate/institutional
sponsors on our heavily-used WWW locations (some stats appended
below), and then end this sponsorship campaign so that our resources
can continue to be used for service provision, not fundraising. Many
of our specialty newsgroup WWW archives are still used by small
communities of scientists (and they haven't been heavily promoted
yet). While these may be valuable niche markets to some advertisers,
it will generate more labor and overhead having to find these
sponsors, fairly price the locations, and deal with lots of smaller
sponsorships than fewer mid-to large sponsors. We are striving to
keep our operation as lean and efficient as possible since we are not
trying to make careers out of running BIOSCI. We are trying if at all
possible to avoid the administrative overhead entailed with processing
lots of small payments to reach our fundraising goals.

I'd like to thank all of you for your help in advance. In helping us,
you are also helping yourselves, not only in keeping this resource
available for all of the both large and small research communities
that we serve, but also by alleviating the need for us to go back and
compete with researchers for tight grant dollars! We promised NSF
when we were awarded the BIOSCI grant that we would carry out this
mission to make the service self-supporting. With your help, we will
succeed in continuing BIOSCI's work into its second decade. Thank you
very much!

				Sincerely,

				Dave Kristofferson
				BIOSCI/bionet Manager

I just subscribed to this newsgroup yesterday and I see most of the
messages are about what is appropriate to post in here. I am interested
in learning about biological vectors that transmits disease....

BUT... does it have to be an arthropod in order for me to post? I will
certainly lurk here in the hopes I can learn more about vectors and how
they transmit disease. The disease I am interested in is almost
certainly viral. Scientists aren't completely sure yet.
