INSTITUTE FOR ANIMAL HEALTH

Job Title: Research Technician				Vacancy No: 05P/0156

Location: Pirbright						Band: 7 

PURPOSE & OBJECTIVES

The successful applicant will joint a team of scientists who are assessing the risk of incursion of globally important insect-transmitted diseases into the UK and Europe. Information gained during the project will allow predictive mapping of the likelihood of future incursions of these diseases and also facilitate a rapid response to such an event. Specifically, the work will involve the oral infection and intra-thoracic inoculation of Culicoides biting midges with bluetongue and other "List A" viruses and the maintenance of infected individuals under controlled laboratory conditions. Use of virus isolation and identification procedures, and other standard virological techniques will also be required. Additionally, the post holder will be expected to assist with field based collection of Culicoides across a broad range of locations in the UK and Europe. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to the general maintenance of laboratory and field based equipm
 ent. 

PERSON SPECIFICATION

A Degree in a biological subject is essential and experience of working under both field and laboratory conditions is desirable.
