EMBO Workshop
"Molecular and Population Biology of Mosquitoes"
13-19 August 2002
Kolymbari, Crete, Greece

This is the second announcement of the EMBO Workshop, modelled after
the well-known "Drosophila Crete Meetings", held at the Orthodox Academy
of Crete in Kolymbari every two years. The main theme of the Workshop
will be the Molecular and Population Biology of mosquitoes, yet we hope
to have participants from working on other major arthropod disease
vectors as well. The meeting's objective is to bring together, for the
first time, an international group of scientists to present their
findings on genome organisation and expression, population structure and
gene flow and development of new tools (e.g. transgenesis) for the
control of disease through the control of their vectors.

The workshop will cover a broad area of topics while maintaining a small
size in order to foster close interactions between the participants. We
expect to accept about 100 people and, as a rule, not more than 1-2
participants can attend from any single lab. All participants will be
required to present a fifteen-minute talk on their work, while some
exceptions may be made for younger colleagues.

The Organising Committee (see the workshop's URL), by vote, will
determine who will be accepted to the workshop since it is possible that
applicant numbers may exceed the available number of slots. Every
attempt will be made to make sure that the attendance is representative
of the mosquito research community worldwide. The entire application
process will be done electronically.

The deadline for receipt of applications is February 15, 2003. The
application form and more details can be found at the URL

                http://www.anobase.org/embo_meeting/

We hope to see you next summer in Crete

On behalf of the Organising Committee,

Kitsos Louis
