For a beginner, Arnold Levine wrote a book called Viruses for
Scientific American. It would be excellent reading for a high schooler
or anyone interested in a first perusal about the nature of viruses and
the diseases they cause. If Emailed direct, I will provide publisher
and other info requested. I believe it was published in '93 or '94.
