The law simply requires that state institutions INTERVIEW women, they
don't have to hire them. I have a friend who is a minority woman,
and she got tons of interviews where it was made perfectly clear to
her that they had to interview her but they had no interest in hiring
her. Of course it was an insult and a waste of everyone's time. I
maintain that it's still the case that women are hired IN SPITE of the
fact that they're female, or else the ratios would be different than
they are. And we all know that you have to be twice as good to get
half as much admiration as a female scientist!
Having interviewed for a faculty position at TAMU, I'm not too
surprised you run into guys with antiquated attitudes like the one you
describe, it seemed pretty awful there.
