I think the reason Monica's posting generated so much heat was that she
was honest about her motives. She has a professor whom she would like to
impress, and her way of impressing the prof is to do a good research
paper, and could she have some help with that, please. My first reading of
her post led me to interpret this as "I want to impress my prof., could I
have some help with that, please." My original comment was intended to
point out that:
1. Given what goes on in medicine/biomedical research, learning how and
when to "schmooze" and impress the right people is a necessary skill
2. Monica seems to have caught on to the need for that skill early on in
her career, and
3. Isn't it a sad comment on how the medical/biomedical world that this is
the case.
I really didn't intend to have a go at Monica, personally, but rather at
the system that produces such cynicism (and realism) so early on in our
careers.
