I've only been around since the p32 incident at NIH was being discussed here
last month, but I really like the format of this group. As others have said, I'm
sure activity will come & go here just like it does in everyone's lives!

By way of introductions, I'm a PhD student in microbiology/immunology at SUNY
Health Science Center at Brooklyn. I'm in my 3rd year, just finished my written
exams (finally!), and am getting ready for orals & thesis proposal in the
spring. I started research in college looking at metalloproteases of tumors and
switched to yeast genetics & biotech as a postgrad - a jump my college research
advisor still isn't used to hearing. Basically, I'm working on proteins involved
in folate uptake in cancers, so it's not that far afield. Between papers,
grants, thesiswork, getting married next year, buying a house, & having my
fiancee's 7 year old come live w/ us this year, I've come to understand that
women in the sciences face some serious challenges! It was reassuring to read
that many women in the field have gotten past this daily flack & do the science
that they love - and do it well. I'm looking foreward to hearing from & about
others out there in the group. Anyway, hello from Brooklyn!
