How about "everybody" instead of "guys"? I was appalled when I realized I
was calling out "Hey, guys" to get the attention of the class in a
large-ish lab - WHEN HALF THE CLASS WAS WOMEN. Seeing where I work
(southwestern Virginia), I probably could have said "y'all" but that
doesn't quite make it with a New York accent. There was a statement in a
previous discuusion along these lines on some net, perhaps even this one,
that a math professor called all the terms "guys". This, to me is even
worse - not only are we claiming by calling eveyone "guy" that only males
are doing science, but by gendering the subject matter itself - - - -!!!
