I spoke with a rep on the helpline for Mac MS Word at Microsoft a couple
of days ago re Word 6. He said they were considering going back to a
product designed for the Mac instead of the PC-designed program, Word 6.
He said the sole reason they went to the PC-like program was to help PC
people who would log onto a Mac and be totally befuddled by the Mac Word.
(They didn't seem to care that the Mac people would have the same problem
when logging onto a PC.) He said that their current market research
indicates that there is perhaps not enough overlap between PC and Mac
users to justify making the Mac Word an inferior product (i.e. like a PC
program!). Conclusion: they may indeed switch back to the superior Mac
program (a Word 5.1 descendent) in the future.
