Alice,
I agree with Gina. Try to forget about it and definitely don't contact
the prominent scientist and apologize. That will just reenforce the
incident in their mind. I am not "prominent" but I have been around
awhile and meet many people at meetings and my brain is so overloaded I
forget these incidents rather quickly (especially if I don't know the
person very well). What I DO remember is if someone repeatedly behaves
this way when I meet them (or if they remind me of the incident later).
