well advisors are mortal too...and he sounds like he is very disappointed
that you are leaving...this should not stop him from writing an honest
letter and you should ask him...anyway until he recovers from
his disappointment he won't hear your thanks...after you settled
and make some progress (a degree, paper, interesting result) drop
him a line and tell him how grateful you were for his support..
