thesis supervisor as co-author?

I would assume that since the advisor got the grant to support the 
research, many of the foundation ideas for the project came from the 
advisor.  Thus, even if they performed no lab work (which I would 
hardly expect them to) and contributed no further intellectual input, 
they should be an author.
