>> Why the stigma?
Well, there's CERTAINLY a stigma from the men if one is
concerned about women's issues. I get that signal very
clearly. Makes the dear old things quite uncomfortable.
They think we are asking them to reduce the standards, or
we are all planning to sue them, or something. No gentlemen,
we're just out to take over your jobs. :-)
But if one is identified with women's issues.
I think one gets labelled "potential troublemaker".
As for the negative attitudes from women scientists in particular,
I put it down to the same attitude that leads so many women
to say "there's no sexism in science! Why, I've never had
a problem and you're all a buncha whiners!" Which is also
quite common, and rather dismaying.
But here's the flip side: if I choose not to be active
in groups like AWIS, does that make me less of a feminist
or less committed to bettering the profession? I think not:
there are only so many hours in the day, and I find that
most of my effort is absorbed in my lab, with a little time for
myself. That's how I choose to distribute my time. That others
distribute it differently is a good thing! I'm all in
favor. It's just not right for me.
On another topic....
Needless to say, I had nothing to do with the Spam-bot's
toner ad. I thought that the Stanford people were de-spamming
this newsgroup?
